Breye Therapeutics Secures €67.5 Million Series A Financing to Advance First-in-Class Oral Therapy for Diabetic Retinopathy
Copenhagen (Denmark) – Golgi Neurosciences congratulates portfolio company Breye Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel oral therapies for retinal vascular diseases within ophthalmology, on the successful first close of its €67.5 million Series A financing round.
The financing was co-led by Mission BioCapital and Novo Holdings, with participation from Sound Bioventures, the Ljungström family office, Innovestor, EIFO, Catalyze Capital, Modi Ventures, and Pappas Capital.
The proceeds will primarily support the advancement of Breye’s lead asset, danegaptide, into a randomized Phase II clinical trial in patients with Non-Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (NPDR). The study is expected to begin in 2027 and aims to establish clinical proof of concept for the therapy.
Danegaptide is an oral small molecule designed to stabilize the retinal vasculature and address vascular leakage associated with diabetic retinopathy. The program recently completed a Phase Ib study in NPDR patients, reporting favorable tolerability and early signs of clinical activity.
Diabetic retinopathy affects more than 130 million people worldwide and remains a leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults. Despite the availability of treatments for advanced disease, there remains a significant need for effective and patient-friendly therapeutic options for earlier stages of the condition.
The new financing will also support the continued expansion of Breye’s broader pipeline of oral therapies for retinal diseases, including its P2X7 receptor antagonist for intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD).
Golgi Neurosciences is proud to support Breye Therapeutics as it advances innovative treatments with the potential to improve outcomes for patients affected by retinal diseases.
