Muna Therapeutics Publishes Landmark Nature Medicine Study Highlighting Microglial Transitions as Drivers of Alzheimer’s Disease
Copenhagen (Denmark) – Golgi Neurosciences is proud to announce that its portfolio company, Muna Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering a new era of drug discovery for neurodegenerative diseases, has published a landmark study in Nature Medicine validating microglial state transitions as key determinants of Alzheimer’s disease progression and resilience.
Leveraging its proprietary MiND-MAP platform, Muna and its academic collaborators mapped Alzheimer’s disease in human brain tissue using spatial transcriptomics and single-cell approaches. The research identifies a critical “tipping point” at which microglia shift from an early protective state to a later-stage phenotype associated with tau pathology and neurodegeneration.
Importantly, the study demonstrates that disease progression is not only driven by amyloid and tau accumulation, but by how microglia respond to these pathologies. The findings suggest that the transition from amyloid to tau may be a dynamic and modifiable process.
The research further highlights the central role of TREM2 signaling, which is enriched in early protective microglial states. This provides strong validation of Muna’s differentiated therapeutic strategy, including its Phase 1 clinical candidate MNA-001, an oral, potent and selective TREM2 agonist designed to enhance the brain’s innate resilience by recalibrating microglial function.
